Administrative Assistant, College of Fine Arts and Communication


Location: Hickory, North Carolina

Part-time (20 hours/week)

The Administrative Assistant provides administrative support for the Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication, supports the college’s daily operations and provides administrative support to many of the academic programs within the college (Visual Art, Communication, English and Theatre) and their public-facing activities. Experience with business office operations, event planning, customer service and social media preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises student workers, including setting work schedules, assigning tasks and assessing performance
  • Provides coaching and training for student workers as needed

Essential Accountabilities

  • Provides administrative support for the college, including maintaining a master calendar and facilitating budget, contract and expense processes
  • Provides administrative support for the dean with responsibility for informational retrieval, reporting and complex administrative matters
  • Onboards new full- and part-time faculty
  • Manages office suite, including office assignments
  • Plans, coordinates and executes logistics for college events and projects
  • Serves as primary liaison between the college and other university departments
  • Promotes a professional and inclusive work environment  
  • Oversees classroom facility operations in the Rhyne Building, PE Monroe and Visual Arts Building
  • Works with Academic Affairs as requested
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the college dean

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software; willingness to learn other software  

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred
  • A minimum of three years experience related to the skills, duties and responsibilities listed is preferred
  • Experience in a higher education setting is preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment
  • Position is physically comfortable; individual has discretion about sitting walking, standing, etc.
  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks

Work Schedule

  • Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. (20 hours/week), with some flexibility possible
  • Up to 20% of teleworking hours will be considered some weeks and during the summer, depending on college needs, at the discretion of the dean
  • Schedule is subject to change based on university needs, scheduled courses and university growth
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand
